John Milton (1608-1674) English poet, polemicist, and civil servant during the Commonwealth 1786

Designed and engraved by Caroline Watson (1760-1814) with an oval portrait miniature, not of John Milton, but most likely John Thurloe (1616-1668) secretary to the council of state in Protectorate England and Cromwell’s spymaster. The original miniature, or an exact contemporary copy, by Samuel Cooper is in the V&A collection in London. Sir Joshua Reynolds once owned the miniature at the time the present print was published. He thought the portrait was that of John Milton.
A very beautiful and interesting print.
