Drawn by William Daniell RA and engraved by R. Woodman for ‘The Oriental Annual, or Scenes in India 1835’ by Hobart Caunter.
William Daniell was 15 years old when he arrived in Calcutta in 1786 with his artist/engraver uncle Thomas, who had adopted the boy after the death of William’s father, Thomas’s brother, in 1779. The Daniells stayed in India until 1793 travelling widely, sketching and painting everywhere they went. The original drawing for this engraving was done between 1788 and 1793
