John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany (1481-1536) and Queen Margaret (Tudor) of Scotland



An interesting print from an intriguing painting. The main characters are John Stewart, Duke of Albany (1481/4-1536), sometime Regent of Scotland, and Queen Margaret of Scotland (1489-1541), sister of Henry VIII and widow of James IV of Scotland. The man on the far right is a royal guard pointing to a butterfly between the main figures. This was supposed to signify a love affair between them. The artist is unknown. It was engraved by Birrell for ‘The Scotish (sic) Gallery, or Portraits of Eminent Persons of Scotland. Some original vertical folds visible on the print.
