France, approach to Royat in the Auvergne
The building in the centre of the view is the church of St Leger which was begun in the 11th century. With its later fortifications it looks more like a castle than a church.
Drawn by the English artist James Duffield Harding (1798-1863), and engraved by J. C. Varrall for ‘The Tourist in France’, being the Landscape Annual for 1834. Paper size 194 x 120 mm.
